Theotropy Project

The Constitution of the Theotropy Project is that God is Love. Nothing more. This is to remind us of the centrality of Love. What is Love? There are so many answer, and we will celebrate that. But the core definition for the Project is this: love is a desire for conjunction. According to Emanuel Swedenborg, love is “spiritual union or oneness.” Secrets of Heaven 5002. God has created us out of love, to be loved, to be loving. This is at the heart of why all peoples are born to turn towards the Divine. That is the literal meaning of Theotropy. Yet, we are not God or the Divine. We experience the separation from God. And that experience is a constant temptation not to turn towards the Divine. So the project is to hold fast. Hold fast to love, and turn towards God.

God is Love. That’s the Constitution of the Theotropy Project.

Emanuel Swedenborg proposed that “mutual love and charity” brings together people who hold different doctrines because such love “draws unity out of variety.” As an illustration, consider the human body and the huge variety of senses and organs that it takes to make up that perfect whole. A community of people has the potential the behave in the same way.

When doctrine or worship varies, then the Lord, working by means of charity, affects and acts on each of us in a way uniquely suited to our personality. In this way he fits each and every one of us into the order of things, on earth just as in heaven. Then, as the Lord himself teaches, his will is done on earth as it is in heaven.
